在读 is a fixed expression used before a noun to describe someone who is currently enrolled and studying at a school or research institute. You cannot use it as a standalone verb like 'I am currently studying' — instead pair it with a role noun: 在读博士 means 'current doctoral student', 在读研究生 means 'current graduate student'. It functions like an attributive adjective.
