喜事 (xǐshì) means any joyful family event — a wedding, a birth, a promotion. Unlike 婚礼 (hūnlǐ), which specifically refers to the wedding ceremony itself, 喜事 is broader. In everyday use, especially with 办 (to hold), it often means 'wedding'.
