Definition
哮 is a bound form (b.f.) that appears in compounds related to roaring, bellowing, or heavy breathing. The most common compound is 咆哮 (páo xiào, 'to roar, to rage'), used for animals or people in anger. Another is 哮喘 (xiào chuǎn, 'asthma'), a medical condition involving labored breathing. Note that although the dictionary lists the pronunciation as xiāo, in standard Mandarin this character is pronounced xiào in all common compounds.
