咖 (gā) is a phonetic character used predominantly in the word 咖喱 (gālí, 'curry'). It has a distinct reading, kā, in 咖啡 (kāfēi, 'coffee'). As a bound morpheme it never appears on its own in modern Chinese; you will always encounter it as part of these two common loanwords.
