Definition
命名 (mìng míng) is a verb meaning 'to name' – the action of giving a name to something, often formally or officially. Unlike the noun 名字 (míng zi 'name'), which refers to the name itself, 命名 is the act of bestowing it. It differs from 称 (chēng 'to call'), which is about addressing someone/something by a name rather than assigning one.
