Definition
告别 (gào bié) means 'to say goodbye' — the social act of bidding farewell, often with emotion or to a place/period. Unlike 离/离开 (to physically leave), 告别 focuses on the farewell itself. Among formal goodbye words, 告别 is the most common; 道别 is slightly more formal, 告辞 is very literary, and 送别 means to see someone off.
