Definition
吱声 means 'to make a sound' or 'to say something', but it is a separable verb (离合词). The verb 吱 and the object 声 can split: you can insert a measure word or duration between them, like 吱了一声 (made one sound). It is most often used in the negative: 不吱声 means 'keep silent, not say a word'. The word is colloquial and common in northern Mandarin.
