Definition
听 (tīng) means 'to listen' — the active act of paying attention to sound. It differs from 听见 (tīng jiàn) 'to hear', which is the passive perception of sound (whether you intend to or not). 听说 (tīng shuō) means 'to hear (that)' — receiving information from someone, not just sound.
