Definition
含泪 is a verb-object phrase (离合词) meaning 'to have tears in one's eyes'. The verb 含 ('to hold in mouth') takes the object 泪 ('tears'), and the two parts can be separated by inserting aspect markers (了, 着), measure words (一滴), or other modifiers — for example, 含着泪 ('with tears held back'), 含了一滴泪 ('held a single tear'). You cannot place a direct object after 含泪; instead the phrase is used with a subject and optionally a following verb or context.
