Definition
名 (míng) as a noun means 'name' but is more formal or used in fixed phrases; 名字 (míng zi) is the everyday word for a person's or thing's name. As a classifier, 名 is a formal count for people (e.g. 三名学生), while 位 (wèi) is more polite and respectful. 名 also means 'place' in a competition (第一名).
