Definition
同音词 refers to words that share the same pronunciation but may have different characters and meanings — essentially homophones. In Chinese linguistics, it is commonly used for homophones (e.g., 是 shì 'to be' and 事 shì 'matter'), while the English term 'homonym' also includes words that are spelled the same (homographs). Note that 同音词 is distinct from 同形词 (homographs) and 多义词 (polysemous words).
