同比 (tóng bǐ) compares a metric with the same period one year earlier (e.g., this January vs last January). Its sibling 环比 (huán bǐ) compares with the immediately preceding period (e.g., this month vs last month). Use 同比 to remove seasonal effects; use 环比 to spot short-term trends.
