Definition
吆 (yāo) means to shout loudly and urgently, particularly to attract customers (as a street vendor) or to urge animals forward. In everyday modern Chinese, it is rarely used alone; it appears almost exclusively in the compound 吆喝 (yāohe, to shout/hawk) or in the fixed expression 吆五喝六 (yāo wǔ hè liù, to boss people around loudly).
