Definition
发源 (fā yuán) means 'to originate' and is used for the physical source of a river, or the historical/cultural origin of traditions, ideas, etc. It differs from 起源 (qǐ yuán), which is more common as a noun ('origin') and can also be a verb; 发源 is specifically a verb and often pairs with 于 (yú) to indicate the source.
