Definition
压根儿 (yā gēnr, also pronounced yà gēnr) is an adverb meaning 'at all' or 'from the very beginning'. It is almost always used in negative sentences to emphatically deny something or state that something never happened. The 儿 suffix is the erhua (rhotacization) version of 压根 (yà gēn), and they are interchangeable. Example: 我压根儿没去过上海 (I've never been to Shanghai at all).
