Definition
卦 refers to the eight trigrams (八卦) of the I Ching (Book of Changes), each composed of three stacked lines (broken or unbroken). These trigrams are the basic symbols used in Chinese divination and philosophical cosmology. Combinations of two trigrams form 64 hexagrams (六十四卦), which are consulted for fortune-telling and guidance. The word is deeply cultural — not just any ‘fortune-telling symbol’ but a specific system rooted in ancient Chinese thought.
