Definition
化验 (huà yàn) refers specifically to a clinical lab test on a biological sample (blood, urine, etc.). It is more restricted than 试验 (shì yàn 'to experiment'), which is about trying procedures in research, and 检验 (jiǎn yàn 'to inspect'), which applies to quality checks across many fields.
