Definition
化妆 (huà zhuāng) means 'to put on makeup' — applying cosmetics to the face. It is a separable verb (离合词): you can insert words like 了 or 得 between 化 and 妆, as in 化了个淡妆. Unlike 装扮 (zhuāng bàn 'to dress up, disguise') which includes costumes and disguises, or 美容 (měi róng 'beauty treatment') which can involve surgery, 化妆 is specifically about makeup.
