Definition
动脉 refers specifically to arteries — the blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart. Its general counterpart is 血管 (xuè guǎn), which covers all blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries). 动脉 is also used figuratively for a main thoroughfare or arterial road.
