Definition
剑 (jiàn) is a double-edged sword, typically straight and used for thrusting and cutting. It differs from 刀 (dāo), which is a single-edged blade (knife or saber) used more for chopping. 剑 is often associated with traditional Chinese martial arts and is more elegant/ceremonial than 刀.
