Definition
剑道 is a Japanese loanword (kendo) that refers specifically to the modern Japanese martial art of swordsmanship, using bamboo swords (shinai) and armor (bogu). In Chinese, it can also loosely mean 'swordsmanship' in a general sense, but it's most commonly associated with the Japanese sport. When talking about Chinese swordsmanship, use 剑术 instead.
