Definition
刻板 originally meant 'to cut blocks for printing' (a literal verb-object phrase), but in modern Chinese it is far more common as an adjective meaning 'rigid, stereotyped, inflexible'. It frequently appears in the compound 刻板印象 ('stereotype') and describes thinking, behavior, or expressions that are unoriginal and fixed. As a verb-object (v.o.), the literal separable usage (e.g., 刻了板) is rare and mostly historical.
