Definition
划桨 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to paddle' or 'to row'. The verb 划 and the noun 桨 can split to insert measure words, durations, or other complements between them, e.g. 划了三次桨 ('rowed three times'). When you want to say what 'to paddle' as an activity, use the full form; when you need to count or modify the action, separate them.
