Definition
分开 means 'to separate' — it can be used for objects (把东西分开) or people (他们分开了). Unlike 离开 (to leave a place/person) or 分离 (more formal/literary), 分开 is everyday, neutral. For a romantic breakup use 分手; for saying goodbye with parting use 分别.
