Definition
As an adverb, 分外 (fèn wài) means 'exceptionally, especially' and is more formal and literary than the common 特别 (tè bié). It emphasizes that something goes beyond the usual degree. 分外 also has a separate adjective sense meaning 'beyond one's duty' (e.g., 分外工作 'extra work').
