Definition
出轨 is a separable verb (离合词) that literally means 'to derail' (of a train), but in everyday language it is most commonly used to mean 'to have an affair' or 'to cheat on a spouse'. As a separable verb, you can insert aspect markers like 了, 过, or measure words between 出 and 轨, e.g., 出了轨 (had an affair), 出过轨 (has had an affair).
