Definition
凰 is a bound character that almost never appears alone — it only exists as the second syllable of 凤凰 (fènghuáng), the Chinese phoenix. In 凤凰, 凤 is the male phoenix and 凰 is the female phoenix, but in modern usage the compound just means 'phoenix' as a mythical bird symbolizing good fortune and rebirth (no gender distinction). You will never use 凰 by itself in a sentence.
