Definition
冠 (guān) is a literary verb with several related senses: literally 'to put on a hat' (a classical ritual act), and metaphorically 'to crown with' or 'to be the best' (as in crowning achievement or ranking first). In modern Chinese, the 'first place' sense is more commonly expressed by the reading guàn (e.g. 冠军), but it appears under guān in formal written contexts. Use this word in elevated, classical, or formal registers.
