Definition
入围 is a verb-object compound (离合词) meaning 'to be shortlisted' or 'to make it to the finals' in competitions, awards, or selections. The first character 入 means 'enter', and 围 means 'enclosure' – together they literally mean 'enter the enclosure', but the modern usage is figurative. As a separable verb, you can insert measure words or other elements between the two characters, e.g. 入了围 ('made the shortlist'), 入不了围 ('can't make the shortlist').
