Definition
催生 is a formal verb meaning 'to give rise to' or 'to bring about (something new)'. It is commonly used in abstract contexts — e.g., a policy that 催生了 economic growth, or a technology that 催生了 a new industry. The original medical sense ('induce labor') still exists but is less frequent. Although classified as a verb-object (离合词) in dictionaries, in modern use it usually takes an object directly (催生了…), and splitting (e.g., 催了一次生) is rare and only applies to the medical sense.
