假设 (jiǎ shè) is both a verb ('to suppose, assume') and a noun ('hypothesis, assumption'). It implies a tentative assumption, often for reasoning or scientific testing. It differs from 假定 (jiǎ dìng), which is more about taking something as given for argument, and from 猜测/猜想, which are guesses without evidence.
