Definition
假如 (jiǎ rú) is a formal, literary 'if' used mainly in writing and hypothetical statements. It is more formal than the everyday 如果 (rú guǒ) and the colloquial 要是 (yào shi), but less archaic than 倘若 (tǎng ruò) or 假使 (jiǎ shǐ). Use 假如 for a slightly elevated, written tone.
