修身 refers to the Confucian concept of cultivating one's moral character through self-discipline and ethical practice. It is a separable verb-object compound (离合词): 修 can take objects or measures between its parts, such as 修了一辈子的身. In modern Chinese it still carries the classical weight of personal virtue development.
