Definition

俭 is a bound form (b.f.) meaning 'frugal' or 'economical'. It cannot be used as an independent word in modern Mandarin; it must be combined with another character to form a compound, such as 节俭 (thrifty, frugal) or 勤俭 (diligent and thrifty). Using 俭 alone would be ungrammatical, so remember to always pair it with a second character.
