Definition
侨民 refers to citizens of a country who live abroad — overseas nationals or expatriates. The English gloss 'alien residents' is misleading because it suggests foreigners living in a country, whereas 侨民 means the opposite: your own country's people living overseas. In Chinese, 外侨 (wài qiáo) is the term for foreign residents. Be careful not to confuse the direction.
