低于 (dī yú) is a verb meaning 'to be lower than' — it compares a thing to a standard or another value (e.g., temperature, income, score). Unlike the adjective 低 (dī, 'low'), which describes a quality, 低于 always takes an object. Its opposite is 高于 (gāo yú, 'higher than'); for purely numerical comparisons (e.g., 5 < 10), use 小于 (xiǎo yú) instead.
