Definition
会试 was the metropolitan examination in imperial China's civil service exam system (科举). It was held in the capital every three years, and successful candidates became gòngshì (贡士) and qualified for the highest-level palace exam (殿试). The gloss 'doctoral exam' is misleading; the proper term is 'metropolitan examination'.
