Definition
任 (rèn) has two main uses: as a verb meaning 'to appoint' or 'to serve as', and as a conjunction meaning 'no matter'. As a verb, it is more formal than 担任 (dān rèn) and 派 (pài), and is more general than 任命 (rèn mìng) and 指定 (zhǐ dìng). As a conjunction, it is very literary and used in writing, while 不管 (bù guǎn) is the everyday spoken equivalent.
