Definition
从军 is a separable verb-object (离合词) meaning 'to enlist' or 'to join the military'. The verb 从 and the noun 军 can split when inserting aspect markers (了, 过) or durations: 从了军 (enlisted), 从过军 (have served in the military). You do not put an object after 从军; instead, use a prepositional phrase like 在军队里 from a broader context. It is more formal than the colloquial 当兵.
