Definition
交手 is a separable verb (离合词). The verb 交 and the noun 手 can be separated by aspect markers (了, 过), measure words (一次), or duration (三天). For example, 交过手 means 'have fought before', and 交了一次手 means 'fought once'. When you want to specify an opponent, use 与/和 + opponent + 交手, not 交手 + opponent. It can be used literally for hand-to-hand combat or figuratively for any competitive encounter.
