Definition
This is a fixed four-character expression (成语) from traditional Chinese medicine that collectively refers to all the major internal organs: the five zang organs (heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys) and the six fu organs (gallbladder, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, bladder, and sanjiao). In everyday usage it simply means 'the entire set of internal organs' or 'one's vitals', often used literally to talk about bodily health or figuratively to describe extreme emotions (e.g., anger so strong it seems to affect the organs).
