Definition
主人公 refers to the main character or protagonist of a story (novel, film, play). It differs from 主角 (zhǔ jué), which means the leading role itself (the part, not the person), and from 英雄 (yīng xióng), which means a heroic figure (not necessarily the main character). 主演 (zhǔ yǎn) is the actor who plays the lead, not the character.
