中 (zhōng) is used after a noun in 在...中 to mean 'in, among, during' — it shows you're inside a space, group, or time. For a physical middle point, use 中间 (zhōng jiān) as a standalone noun. For 'between' two items, use 之间 (zhī jiān); 之中 (zhī zhōng) is a literary equivalent.
