Definition
中考 (zhōngkǎo) is the standardized high school entrance examination in China, taken by students at the end of junior middle school (grade 9). It determines admission to senior high schools and is a major academic milestone, comparable to the SAT or GCSEs in other countries. The term is distinct from 高考 (gāokǎo, college entrance exam) and 期中考试 (qīzhōng kǎoshì, midterm exam).
