中止 means to suspend or discontinue something that is already in progress — it implies a halt before completion. This is more specific than 停止 (a general stop) and less final than 终止 (termination). 中断 (interrupt, break off) focuses on a break in continuity, while 中止 focuses on ceasing the whole activity.
