中原 (zhōng yuán) is a historical and cultural term referring to the Central Plains of China — the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, especially modern-day Henan province. This region was the cradle of ancient Chinese civilization and the political heartland for many dynasties. In broader usage, it can also stand for China as a whole, especially in historical or literary contexts.
