Definition
个案 (gè àn) refers to an individual case studied on its own, common in medical, legal, or academic research. Unlike 案例 (àn lì, a typical example for reference) or 案件 (àn jiàn, a legal case/crime), 个案 focuses on the uniqueness of a single instance. It differs from 特例 (tè lì, an exception) in that 个案 is not necessarily exceptional.
