不可思议 describes something so extraordinary it defies imagination — it goes beyond what one can conceive. It differs from 难以置信 ('hard to believe'), which is more factual and neutral; 荒唐 and 荒诞 ('absurd, preposterous') imply judgmental foolishness, while 不可思议 can be wondrous or simply unfathomable.
