Definition
下车 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to get off a vehicle' (car, bus, train, etc.). The verb 下 and the object 车 can split when inserting aspect markers, measure words, or duration: e.g., 下了车 (got off), 下了一次车 (got off once). This is the standard modern usage; note that the dictionary gloss 'take up one's post' is an archaic or marginal sense not used in everyday Chinese.
