Definition
下毒 is a separable verb (离合词) meaning 'to poison' — literally 'to put (下) poison (毒)' into food, drink, or medicine. When you add aspect markers, measure words, or duration, the two syllables split: 下过毒 ('has poisoned before'), 下了毒 ('poisoned'), 下了一次毒 ('poisoned once'). The person or thing being poisoned is introduced with 给 (gěi): 给咖啡下毒 ('poison the coffee').
